In a surprising twist, Fox News stands alone as the only cable news network to grow its viewership in February 2026, while its competitors face declining numbers. This is the key takeaway from TVNewser’s latest cable news report for the week of February 2, 2026, which reveals a stark contrast in performance among major networks. But here's where it gets controversial: Is Fox News’ success a sign of shifting viewer preferences, or does it reflect a broader trend in media consumption?
Fox News kicked off the month with impressive gains, marking its highest-rated week since September 2025 in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demographic during primetime and total day. According to Nielsen’s big data and panel measurements, Fox News averaged 2.633 million total viewers and 275,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime, up by +3% and +12%, respectively, compared to the previous week. In total day viewing, the network averaged 1.725 million total viewers and 175,000 A25-54 viewers, showing increases of +4% and +9%. These numbers solidified Fox News’ position as the top network in total primetime viewership and the second-ranked network in the demo among all basic cable networks.
Meanwhile, MS NOW and CNN experienced across-the-board declines. MS NOW saw a -12% drop in total viewers and an -11% decline in the demo during primetime, while its total day numbers fell by -10% and -15%, respectively. CNN’s primetime viewership dropped by -9% in total viewers and -16% in the demo, with total day figures declining by -11% and -19%. These losses pushed CNN down to fifth place in total day viewership among all cable networks.
And this is the part most people miss: When comparing these numbers to the same period in 2025, the trends become even more intriguing. Fox News, despite its recent growth, was down year-over-year by -14% in total viewers and -31% in the demo during primetime. MS NOW, on the other hand, had grown by +14% in the demo during primetime in 2025, while CNN was the only network to see gains across the board last year, with a +48% increase in total primetime viewers.
In terms of programming, Fox News dominated the charts, claiming 13 out of the 15 spots for the most-watched cable news shows of the week. The Five led the pack with 4.081 million total viewers at 5 p.m. ET, while also topping the Adults 25-54 demo with 364,000 viewers. MS NOW’s The Rachel Maddow Show held its ground in seventh place with 2.399 million total viewers, and CNN’s CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip secured a spot in the demo chart with 186,000 viewers.
Here’s a thought-provoking question for you: As Fox News continues to grow while its competitors struggle, does this signal a permanent shift in the cable news landscape, or is it merely a temporary blip? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let’s spark a discussion!
