The Battle for Finland's Second City: A New Twist
In the age-old rivalry between Tampere and Turku, a new chapter unfolds. For the first time since 1977, Turku has overtaken Tampere in terms of population growth, marking a significant shift in Finland's urban landscape. This development is particularly intriguing given Tampere's recent reputation as Finland's most attractive city to live in.
Turku's International Allure
According to regional researcher and Turku city strategy director Timo Aro, the key driver behind Turku's growth is its international appeal. Last year, Turku attracted more people from abroad through net migration than Tampere. Additionally, Turku saw an influx of people from other parts of Finland, especially foreign-language speakers. Aro explains, "In other words, Turku is more attractive both in terms of international migration and in the subsequent internal migration of immigrants within Finland."
Tampere's Suburban Migration
Statistics Finland's data reveals a notable trend in Tampere. Approximately 16,700 people moved out of Tampere last year, the highest such figure ever recorded for the city. Aro attributes this to the surrounding municipalities becoming exceptionally attractive, drawing people away from Tampere. Three of Tampere's neighboring municipalities, including Pirkkala and Nokia, were among the top ten in terms of internal net migration.
Unemployment's Impact on Tampere
Pekka Salmi, director of Tampere's economic development unit, acknowledges that the city's decline in population growth is not surprising. He states, "Since the economy has faltered and unemployment has grown quite strongly, of course that reduces net migration and our attractiveness. Fewer people will move to the city when there are not enough job opportunities."
Tampere had around 21,000 unemployed job seekers in December, with just over 1,000 open positions available, resulting in a bleak 16.2% unemployment rate. Despite these challenges, Tampere still has about 50,000 more inhabitants than Turku.
The Future of Finland's Urban Landscape
Aro notes that Turku's rapid rise is catching up with Tampere's lead, but it won't overtake Tampere without municipal mergers. Meanwhile, Espoo, just west of the capital, remained Finland's second-largest city last year with a population of 321,000. This evolving dynamic raises intriguing questions about the future of Finland's urban centers and the factors that influence their growth and decline.
